Greetings from the USA!  (Apologies for my lack of Swedish!)

As EvilSpook posted above, my name is Greg Warren, and I'm on the project team for Compass Games The Third World War series.  I wanted to give a brief update on the project we are currently working on and look at future projects.

Right now we are working on East Asia Front: Battles for Manchuria, Korea, Taiwan, and Hokkaido. This game will have two 22" x 34" maps (apologies for the imperial measurement as that is what Compass uses for their map sizes) covering Manchuria and Korea, one 17" x 22" map for Hokkaido (this connects to the main Manchuria maps), and one 11" x 17" map for Taiwan (this does not connect to the other maps). The Soviet invasion of Hokkaido and the Chinese invasion of Taiwan scenarios will both be playable just on their own maps. A battle for the Korean peninsula scenario can be played on just one 22" x 34" map (and really just half of that map is used). The Soviet invasion of Manchuria scenario uses both 22" x 34" maps. And, of course, a campaign game using all of the maps will be in the game. This game will most likely go to market in 2024.

Probably the next game in the series will be India-Pakistan, hopefully published in 2025. This will be one 22" x 34" map, and then most likely a new version of the current Map F, which will add some partisan borders for Afghanistan. The new map (Map G) and Map F will connect together.

After that other potential projects could be:
  • Yugoslavia and Soviet break-up (this would probably include an updated order of battle for the original games)
  • Southeast Asia
  • Middle East (this would fill-in the gap in Turkey, add territory to the west of the current Map E (including Cyprus), and include Egypt and northern Libya
  • Cuba and Central/South America
  • Horn of Africa
  • South Africa
  • a naval module (I'm not sold on this on, as it seems the scale of the game does not fit)

Some of the initial map work has already been done for India-Pakistan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.  Bruce Yearian (artist on the Compass Games edition) has already completed maps for East Asia Front, which are being reviewed now.

I'm happy to answer any questions, and welcome any comments.

Best,
Greg

Hi Greg!

And thank you for your info on this game series, going forward. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming games/addons.

Of the other potential developments, this one is the most anticipated for me. I think it could be a great game if coupled with the diplomatic card game from Persian Gulf. It would be very satisfying to try to secure allies without pi**ing off others in the volatile Middle East region.

There is a bit of a love/hate relationship for the series on this forum, with almost all the hate-part coming from Arctic Front. I think All of us would love an update of it. The main concerns throughout the years has been the following I think.

OoB
Finland - Wartime organisation (2 armorbrigades/11 overlandbrigades/14 infantrybrigades/+ 200 local defense battalions.
Swedish - Wartime organisation / mobilization
Swedish - Divisional assets
Swedish - Armored Brigades vs Norrland brigades (values)
Swedish - Local defense forces (Fo-units). Powerful defense values but no or limited movement.

General issues

Surrender
Surrender of Nordic countries linked to control of the cities made no sense at all in GDWs Arctic Front. It's better with Compass games updated rules (Cities and ports).

Overall gameplay
The expected flow of events would be pretty much as the invasion of Ukraine was.
Where Sweden and Finland would initially trade territory for Soviet proficiency, until the invasion is completely bogged down. Smaller local counterattacks were planned and would increase as the soviets became less mobile.

Defensive strategy
Sweden (as well as Norway and Finland) had huge amounts of mines and explosives for bridge demolition.
There were also fortified lines, fortresses and prepared defensive terrain where the enemy would have been engaged under favourable conditions, with indirect fire and in many cases may have been completely ambushed.
This would slow the armored thrust, but more importantly almost stop the wheelbased soviet supplies entirely for quite a long time.

Landings
Sweden (and to some extent Norway) relied on massive missile strikes from ships and aircraft, and an inner circle of coastal defense to stop the soviet invasion fleet.
This translates poorly to the sea-control rules of the game where the soviets are unable to do anything until they get the baltic sea control but then totally free to invade once when they have it. I think a more direct approach where the Soviets must achieve local superiority/suppression would be better.

Troop proficiency
As for the soviets, Sweden and Finland relies on large armies of conscripts.
The Soviets were expected to have a rather low quality for the later units (Category C).
In Sweden and Finland however mobilized troops was not expected to be up to full capacity at the time of mobilization, rather they would need a few weeks for complimentary training.
Once retrained they were however expected to be superior to all but the most elite soviet forces.

Scale
There is also a general issue with Scale that is not easily fixed. But the game system lends itself better in so many ways to the unit types and density of central Europe than the northern wastes.

Again - thank you, and welcome to the forum!

And do something that gives sweden a bonus for the road-based-airfield-system, maybe there should be more difficult to cratering , maybe the swedish aircraft should have higher maintenance-number ?

And please, make it possible, to move neutral country troops once the war is in full swing, i dont see why the army should stay put, in their barracks, when war is raging around their countries.

I think that if the additional Middle East module is done, the diplomacy game would have be reinvented. It seems that trying to fit the existing diplomacy game in with new countries and situations would get messy. But, my vision is that it would stay basically the same, but just expanded.

Right now, we are working with the NATO Order of Battle, v8.6 by Andy Johnson as our main source for orders of battle.  Additional sources include: https://www.fireandfury.com/orbats/modcwsweden.pdf and https://military-history.fandom.com/wiki/Structure_of_the_Swedish_Armed_Forces_in_1989.

The Johnson OoB lists for Sweden:
5 overland
10 infantry (77R)
8 infantry (66M)
5 armor (63M), with the brigade on Gotland having slightly different equipment
1 mechanized (very similar to armor)

We will likely take the division assets (a lot of artillery, plus a few other units) and split those up between the brigades in each military area. This is consistent with how it was done by Chadwick in the original games and we are doing with East Asia Front.

Regarding the local defense FO units, my assumption is that those are represented by the territorial units that Chadwick has in the game.  But, there are some Soviet static units being added in East Asia Front, so that is something we will have to revisit.

It was actually changed to cities and ports for surrender in the original Persian Gulf game.  I do agree that the surrender rule makes more sense this way.

Interesting thought on the road-based airfield system.  It is something we will have to consider.

Yes, I agree that neutral countries should be able to move before war breaks out.  That is fairly easy to implement with countries that you know are going to commit to a certain side (Sweden, Austria, Finland to NATO; Albania to the Pact), but the challenge becomes some of the neutrals in the Persian Gulf where you don't know which side they will commit to; who would be responsible for moving them?  Maybe it's the player to the side that the neutral is leaning on the diplomacy track; maybe you alternate by turn.  This is something that has been discussed, how to implement with minimual additional rules overhead will be the challenge.

Yes - it also has the risk of players just moving units back and forth in an unrealistic manner depending on who's in control at the time.
