Tannenberg is a really hard campaign to model. The Russian 1st and 2nd Armies were almost completely uncoordinated and the Germans had the huge advantage of their intercept intelligence that let them know where the Russians were going to a large extent.

TitE (and its earlier predecessors "The Cossacks are Coming) do an OK job, but I've seen some games of the Tannenberg scenario of TiTe that turn into wild Russian cavalry advances.

Many of the elements that make it a fascinating campaign to read about make it not very much fun to model or play, if you're looking to understand the historical elements as the applied in 1914.

Mike Resch is still working on a more TitE-like combat and loss system for OaO.

Salute fellow Wargamers!

I'm looking to buy a copy of " Brandywine and Germantown," by CoA. A punched player's copy would be fine.

Please PM me if you're interested.

Don't think it's arrived in Europe yet. A friend and I both pre-ordered through P500 and we're still waiting for our copies....

Hi Lars,

I played two games of the module years ago. It has it's problems for sure, but it has potential. My friend has actually been working on a vassal module...are you interested in seeing it?

Lars,

Thanks for doing this. Myself and a friend have the module, and we're reading your rules with interest.

CiteraUnfortunate news! While I am certain everybody understands I still must say that I really looked forward to this game.

Hi Ola, thanks for the kind message--I didn't see it until today for some reason.

"Romania" is definitely not dead, and the publisher has given me his full support to get back to him when I'm ready to work on it again.

I have been also considering a simpler form of the game--using a different scale and a much easier system. It could be that there is more than one game, or version of games. The research is all done, and that's what took me three years to do.

Good morning,

Just a quick update. I posted on CSW, but I've not come around to the other forums yet.

For right now "Romania," is on hold as a project. Unfortunately, for me designing wargames can only be a hobby. I have to work my normal job and also there is also my family.  I have spent a lot of time working on the game by myself for the past years, and it is about 80% done, but now I need to let it sit for some time while I take care of "real life."

On the positive side it is a good game. I say this as a player and not as the designer. Also, the publisher who would like to print the game is still very supportive, and we still hope to get the game done in the future.

I've played a few games of "Strafexpedition." It's a good game. I think you'll enjoy it. The component quality is good also.
The designer Andrea Brusati*, is working on another game using the same system. He really knows mountain warfare.

*disclaimer: I know Andrea well. :)

  Hello Guys,

It's been some time since I posted here and I wanted to provide an update. We're play-testing this weekend and the game is progressing well. We've been working on some new systems for supply and unit subordination. We think we've come up with a way to eliminate the army charts and unit CE markers, cutting the number of counters by almost 50%.

Here are the revised map and some sample counters. The new counters are quite a bit different than the old, but much, much easier to read and with more information.

Next step will be to see how the game plays--the balance. We played the southern front already--the Dobrogean campaign, and it followed very historical lines. This was reassuring as it meant the unit valuations were close.

The northern front and the Romanian invasion of Transylvania will very interesting to watch. AS it look son the map it seems the Romanians will simply roll over the AH forces--which is what they did for a few weeks. I suspect it will take only the arrival of a few German divisions to slow things down.

I'm also curious how the fighting on the eastern side of the map will play. There are some powerful Russian forces there.

I've also added the hex grid to the Black Sea area as well, as there will be some naval units, and I think this will be necessary.

I've almost finished the German units--the last I needed to complete. They were by far the most complicated. The units involved go from the best (The Alpenkorps) to the worst (217th Infantry) so it is a very interesting mix of forces.

The mountain warfare aspect of the game will be important, as it's how the Romanians blocked the passes for two months, and in the end how the Central Powers broke the stalemate. On the Eastern side of the area the Russians also had mountain units and there was some savage fighting around the Kirlibaba area.

I really like the mixing of the proficiency rating from OaO/SmS and the combat and loss systems from TitE. They seem to work well together and it's simple--the best part! I may have to go back and mark some of the units with a symbol as "unsupported" meaning they has no artillery at all. Many of the Romanian units have a small amount of artillery that doesn't add up to even 1, but not penalizing them for the unsupported modifier would be a good way to show this.

Things are coming along, and I am very happy with the game so far.

Good Morning,

Just a picture of the updated map. Not changed too much, but the hex grid is darker and I've defined the terrain colors some to make the contrast more. The map is ready for our next play-test.
