This week-end we played OCS Enemy at the Gates (w/ 3.1 rules) at the Swedish Lincon Gaming Convention, and this is an attempt to produce a brief AAR. We played Scenario 6 "Little Saturn Campaign Start".

You can a couple of pictures from this event at:

Keep in mind that the first turn is turn 9. I played the northern part of the Russian front and can only provide details on that part of the fighting. Nevertheless, here it is:

The Russians decided to quickly ground down the Germans forces in Stalingrad and retake the city by force. In about four turns, the 6th Army was split in three and left without any supplies left. The German lost the air war over the city, mostly due to the airfield being within range of the Russian artillery. Some 6th Army infantry forces managed to break out, shewing on their horses as they went, and headed to the north-west. It could have been a successful break-out attempt, had it been supported by an attack originating from the German lines. However, the main relief attempt came from Kotelnikovo and met very little success.

In the north, the Russians broke through the Italians lines at Boguchar - the setup leaves you little choice in this regard. Their armored pincers swung north and south and initially created some smaller pockets. The German player withdrew his Italian forces as fast as he could, creating a huge hole in his line. The Hungarians attempted to hold their initial positions for a while longer. After reducing the initial small pockets, the Russian commander scheduled the Hungarian army for destruction. The Russians considered to use the gap in the lines to get far into German-held territory, and they had plenty of mechanized forces to wreck havoc. But the follow-up infantry was deemed too slow and to few to be able to fend off the inevitable Italian and/or Hungarians counter-attacks against the Russian supply routes.

During the next turn (turn 10), couple of smaller and a larger, looser pocket was created. Neither of which were particular successful operations.  The pockets consisted of mostly Hungarian troops mixed with a couple of German and Italian units. Those caught in the looser pocket was able to withdraw within trace, and those caught in the tighter pockets were able to overrun their opposition and eat on-map SP supplied by trucks. The Russians gained ground, which was of little value to them, and failed to destroy the enemy. This process repeated for about three turns, with the Germans supply network being disrupted further and further to the west and the Hungarians being ground down. In a confused running battle along the Chern river, the fleeing Axis forces managed to encircle a Russian tank corps on the Valuyki-Ostrogozsuk road. Novy Oskol was seized by strong Russian forces, which fended off a counterattack by a Panzer division. The Hungarians, often in Move Mode and in the open were hit by Russian tank forces, and the encircled tank corps was freed. On turn 12, the Russians cut the important railline through Urazovo with weak forces, soon to be overrun by German operational reserves. On turn 13, the even more important hub at Kupiansk was cut by a Tank Corps. A desperate counter-attack (including about eight hip shots) failed to dislodge these forces, but the Germans steered off total disaster using extenders and on-map supply. On turn 14, Valuyki was surrounded by the 1st Guard Mechanized Corps. The fate of what little left of the Hungarian army was sealed.

Through-out the game, the overall Russian supply situation was very good. The consumption was about 30 SP/turn, so most of the large 50 SP dump was still intact. What had started to be an issue was the fact that the northern armored spearhead had left the throw-range of the Russian 15-0 HQ which created a combat-supply problem, since many of the trucks were tied up as extenders. But the RR units was working on it, and only waited for the clean-up operations to finish and the rail roads becoming free of Hungarian units.

And suddenly we had played for three straight days, and it was time to finish this game of Enemy of the Gates.

Some random thoughts:

This game allows allows both players to attack, and leaves both players with powerful mobile forces.

As in most OCS games, every turn is exciting and a game in itself. Not being able to finish the scenario is not a major issue.

We felt that the variable replacement tables are much too random.

The initial German setup is poor, leaving many valuable resources unguarded. We adopted a house rule, allowing the Germans to garrison important assets with using a few extra break-down regiments. I would have liked to see more security forces in the OB.

Overall, an excellent game and must admit I'm a bit surprise it has stood the test of time so well. Thanks Dean and all you others how brought this to us.

Bra jobbat i Krigsspelslummet.
