Engelbrekt, what side are you playing? There are a number of options for playing well, outlined in the game. A lot of players get distracted by the North when it's the Midlands where the game is often won or lost.

Just solo so far, but planning to play a game ftf soon. I've read the play tips, but when I sit down with the game somehow it does not click, hence I went for the short cut of perhaps having someone here show me the ropes. Delirium has kindly offered to teach me the game since. I wouldn't have thought that the North was important, my money was in the South, not the Midlands. Thanks for the hint, I will keep it in mind for the that first real game.

You'll find a large number of Royalist players will favour sending the King north to deal with the Fairfaxes and later the Covenanters, which he can often do quite handily. This can leave the Royalists short of a good army in the Midlands, however, which in turn can make the South harder to contest. You'll find the final turns one in which both sides whizz around trying to Hoover up areas. Whoever controls the centre prior to this point will be in the stronger position.

It may be that David's problem, which he probably shares with several other players of this fascinating game, is not so much knowing where to focus his efforts of control, but how to exert control in the first place. Learning the grand strategy of UKC is of course important, but the game's tactics are not easily grasped. For one thing, I don't think you can overestimate the importance of Local Notables.
