Ola Palmquist. Spelar nu:  GMTs Typhoon. Därefter SPIs Operation Typhoon, Revolution Games Red Typhoon, ATOs Circle of Fire; The Siege of Cholm, Legions Demyansk Shield, GMT Barbarossa; Crimea  och kanske Barbarossa, Army Group North.

Reporter: "What do you feel when you kill an insurgent?"
Operator: "Recoil"

Now Playing: Ftf - World In Flames, pbem - Here I Stand, Age of Renaissance

Hei,

PS: As Jack Radey and Lou's politics, you are completely of base. Google his thesis and reread some of Jacks old articles for Grenader. Then come back to the forum and apologise.

The Man Himself bad mig posta detta:

My wife Reidun has translated for me the comments by you and others about
Moscow Attacked!, 1st Alamein, and my politics.  Allow me to offer a few
corrections and please post them for me under the thread.

The boxes - including Alamein itself - can indeed be taken, frontally, but the position
is more usually broken open by attacks on the other boxes or in the more open
south.  The 1st Battle of Alamein was the wildest one and Rommel's best
chance to break through, because of the thinnness of units.

When defending a box, the Allied player usually invokes No Retreat! which
means half his units can be eliminated on an R2 forced retreat result.

The hexes are roughly artillery range in width, which is why they stop enemy
movement and force advancing enemy units to attack ... or pull back.  The
mechanics are very classic, harkening back to the earliest Avalon Hill games,
but they are effective with the spent/dispersed units rule.  Indeed, disaster
usually occurs, if a player doesn't keep units in reserve to plug holes.

The game can be very close, and my older son Robert often beats me by
taking Rommel-like low-odds risks to break open the British position and
seize the initiative.  It has been exhaustively playtested.

As to Moscow Defended!, it is fast and simple, but does its job.  Rules do
exist as notes on the combat results, terrain effects, etc. webpages.
Some of the guys here in Norway seem to like my games, but they do
have the designer within reach, to hold me accountable for rules
  clarifications.

Regarding Sturm nach Osten published in the Wargamer, it still has an
active following, thanks to its breakout and armor refit rules,
rubber band strengths of some units, etc.  It is hardly "boring."  :-)

And probably the best game I will ever design, German Eagle vs. Russian
Bear, is free on my www.coatneyhistory.com webpage.

I am running mini-tournaments of both 1stA and MD! this Friday, at ArCon26,
  here in Oslo.  http://www.spillfestival.no/arcon26/program.php

I was amused by Snowjerk's 180-out assessment of my politics, which would
astonish and grimly amuse Jack Radey.  I doubt the Russians and Jack's
other friends appreciate my research and thesis about the Katyn Massacre
(1940) as a Cold War issue, even now.  (You can read my thesis via my
LCoat webpage.)  And I fought the Left and Soviets hard in the public
forums back in Alaska in the 70s and 80s.

Until Cheney&Bush, I considered myself to be a Reagan Republican, and it
should be noted that Kosovo and Iraq were "neoconservative" - Trotskyist
  - operations which have caused strategic and economic disaster for the
West, which would have gratified Lev Bronstein immensely.

I know Sweden is pretty remote - even here in Norway I can't find a decent
pencil sharpener, photocopy shop, matt board to mount units, etc. - but if
some of you fellows can make it west to ArCon this weekend,
please drop by my table and say hei.

All the best.

Well Lou, I remember disctincly that your political position was discussed a bit in the wargaming club where I spent lots of time in during the early 80's. So the hat off for managing to fool all of us.

As a matter of fact I am happy you stay on the right side of the line.   :)

However, the translation of my comment on Sturm Nach Osten fell short. It wasnt that it was boring that was the reason for stopping spending time on it. Your design, as presented in the Wargamer, didnt feel like it was hanging together considering the time/space scale used. Your designfocus was not to my liking. Simple as that.

Let me finish with some friendly advice, we dont use namecalling here. Elias should have noticed and fixed it when forwarding your post but I guess his brain was pretty mushy from sitting next to a heatsource in the middle of a heatwave when posting.

Elias, my thanks to Fred Forde for speaking about my games here,
and my thanks to you for posting my riposte to the criticisms
of them ... and of me.

As to Snowcritter's opinion of Sturm Nach Osten,

"Your design, as presented in the Wargamer, didn't feel like it
was hanging together considering the time/space scale used.
Your design focus was not to my liking."

... the design focus he describes is exactly why it remains popular
in certain circles, so he's still 180-out.  :-)

The Oslo University's wargames club should resume meeting this
autumn, and seems very welcoming to visiting wargamers - possibly
even Swedes.  :-)  If anyone wants to try 1st Alamein, Moscow
Defended!, or German Eagle vs. Russian Bear face to face against
their designer ... who loses playing them even against beginners,
more often than not ... let me know.

By the way, I got my undergraduate degree in philosophy from Augustana
College - "Uppsala West" - Rock Island, Illinois.  As a student assistant,
I was working in the archives and special collections room, when Jan
Troell was researching Swedish-American family diaries, letters, etc. for
his 2 films about Swedish-American immigrants which starred Max von
  Sydow and Liv Ullmann.

The only heriditary link we have to Scandinavia ... that I know of ... is
that Aberdeen University mathematics dean William Jack's ancestors
had apparently been from the Shetland Islands, a big Viking hangout
... and our baby son did indeed turn out to be Rohan the Red(-haired).

And now, back to (writing) my book ... about model ship building
  and naval wargaming.

Again, all the best to everyone ... including SnowFox ... over there.

Lou
  Coatney, http://boardgame.geekdo.com/thread/318557/a-hidden-gem

Also, I presented a defense/explanation of my Siberian Reserve
rule (in Moscow Defended!, among other games) under the BGG
  thread My Favorite Rule, at

http://boardgame.geekdo.com/geeklist/10 ... ent1607568

Thanks again.

Hej Elias,
