Wait a minute, wasn't our Lee B-W involved with this one at some stage?

Yes, Tony and I designed and demoed the early versions of the game. Then we had a falling out just after 9/11 when Tony became upset with me. The game was finished by Tony and Phil Markgraf.

Have you played the finished game? What do you think about it? Is it fun?

I have not played it yet. I need to review my copy of the game more closely but I fear that Tony has succumbed to the excesses of process. This was something that I was trying to restrain him from doing.

This is what I fear about the game, but I have heard conflicting stories about this. Some seem to say that the game is much more intuitive to play than Fighting Wings.

Whistling Death is the only game I've felt too stupid to play. That elevation wheel using bold, underline and italic to tell you how much energy you had to use in vertical and horisontal movement, how much vertical movement you got regardless of energy etc did me in. The dangers of complexity creep, Air Superiority wasn't very complex back in its days. I keep thinking of going back to it.

Isn't this the game that P-O has been trying ot learn for two years now? Seems he read two pages and then meditates on them foor weeks and weeks.

That's because the PHAD was always way more intuitive than the obscure transitions in Fighting Wings. (Indeed, BoP was very largely a reaction against what was percieved to be the excesses of Fighting Wings.)

The essence of 3D motion is handled much better in BoP. However, the performance side, which was what Tony wrestled with so hard when I was working with him, is where it seems to have gone pear-shaped. I'm sure it works, but I'm also sure it is less accessible than the model we had in 2001.

I was on the mailing list back when it was designed, and followed the construction process with interest as long as it was public. I read the rules and looked at the early/finished game (which looked neat) but never felt an urge to play it. Perhaps because it was a reaction to the AirPower system which I still like.  8)

Well, maybe I can handle complicated performance rules better than complicated 3D motion rules?

This discussion makes me want to pull out the fighting wings/air power games again...

3D movement was the critical breakthrough. All of a sudden all that was fiddlesome and difficult in the Air Sup/Fighting Wings series was fixed. 3D motion did not change a lot once we had settled on the final PHAD and even the current version is still close to our prototype.

The aero modelling was the thing that went through a lot of iterations.

Shat kind of complexity are we talking about, on the level of Speed of Heat and such?

I'd say much more complex. A far better model, but a lot more process.
