Charles has already done a non-CDG on the subject and it becomes a game about campaigning rather than the scope and breadth of a war. Given the heady mix of religion and politics I think you'd miss a lot without the cards. Maybe you need a nutter like me to help flesh out the narrative. The cards, it seems to me, are rich and varied. But then I see where they slot into the story.
